I really can't review this film without giving too much away. So this will be short and sweet as I want the joy to be found in the viewing of the film.
The movie starts with two office workers (played by Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins) obviously getting ready for a long shift.
Flash to a group of 5 college kids (1 smart,1 stoner, 1 jock, 1 promiscuous blonde, one redhead female just getting over a breakup with one of her professors) goin to one of their cousin's cabins in the woods to hang out for a weekend full of sex and drugs.
On their way, they meet a creepy store owner, drive through a tunnel, there is a wolf head hanging in the main room of the cabin, and a creepy cellar below.
That is all that I will say. While, yes, it is very cliche, that is the fun of it. Cabin in the Woods was co-written by Joss Whedon (of Buffy and Angel fame, and, in 3 weeks, director of Avengers), and, if you watched Buffy or Angel on TV, you know that he took well-used tropes and cliches and flipped them and created something wholly different. This is exactly what he does here.
Some scenes are played totally cliched (while being the point) and others are so giddily flipped that, as the scenes unfold, you are never quite sure what to expect.
As it is very cliche, be aware that its R rating is for exactly what you might expect (violence, gore, nudity, drugs), but not in the same laborious way as you are used to seeing.
If you have seen any horror movies, especially the'cabin in the woods' variety, you owe it to yourself to see this film.
